LYON CLOSE TO UCL QUALIFICATION

Lyon picked valuable points as they thrashed Dynamo Zagreb 1-0, keeping alive their chances of reaching the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal summer target Alexandre Lacazette scored a second half striker that ensured Lyon took home the spoils from the clash at the Stadion Maksimir. Lyon got double victory as their wish was granted in Serie A champions Juventus thrashing Sevilla 3-1 in Spain.

The French giant would be sure to get a spot in the next stage if they can defeat the Spanish side in the final group game at home next month. Group H is led by Juventus – who are assured of qualification. Sevilla’s loss means Lyon can snatch a second place spot to qualify if they win the last group game by at least two goals – having lost to Sevilla 1-0 at home in September.

Lyon did not have it easy in the game against Zagreb, even though a win was expected. Historically, Lyon were the favourites, defeating them 7-1 in the 2011/12 season before a 3-0 win in September.

In the game, Zagreb denied their attempts on earlier goals. In the 28th minute they came close with Jordan Ferri’s effort deflecting off Lacazette to hit the framework. Efforts from former Red Devils player Raphael Da Silva, Lacazetter and Ferri were stopped by the goalkeeper of the host team Dominik Livakovic.

Lyon kept on with the threats despite the hosts trying as well through Domagoj Pavicic and Amer Gojak. In the 72nd minute, Da Silva ran into the box to find Lacazette who scored the lone goal of the game. The Croatian side were disappointed that they could not force a draw at least at home, even if they were not making the next round.
